Clapback. When brands strike back on social media.

Social media can be an absolute goldmine for companies and brands to find new business, customers, or even just show off their successes. But while these platforms can be helpful, they can also be a magnet for abuse, complaints, and feedback whether unwarranted or otherwise.

Sometimes, brands ‘clapback’ as the kids call it these days. When a social media user, or ‘clout’ chaser (see, we’re up with the times) has a run at a brand, the brand has a go back.

This tactic can be very useful! Especially on platforms like Twitter, it can go viral, quickly. When done with poise and sensitivity of course!

Here are our favourite examples of true brand-based savagery.

5. Netflix v Hulu.

This isn’t strictly a clapback at a social media user, but rather Netflix throwing shade at their US competitor Hulu’s latest ad.

4. Square-ly defeated.

The original tweet has since been deleted, but if you’re going to be throwing some shade, check your username first. Thankfully for us, Square definitely noticed.

3. Sega’s regrets.

The original poster seems to have grown up slightly with his normal name, but thankfully, his old one has been immortalised in Sega’s spot on reply.

2. They did the math.

Someone decided to call the Smart Car weak. Thankfully, at Smart Car HQ, they did the math.

1. No love lost.

Twitter is a great place for some self-deprecating humour. And it’s even funnier when the Royal Mail join the pile on.

A bit of personality is such a strong message to send through your social media when done correctly. These examples if worded just a bit differently, could have resulted in calamity.
